Embracing Expat Life: A Journey to Hong Kong

Hong Kong

"As an expat, home becomes more of a feeling than a place."

Embarking on the expat journey can feel like diving into an exhilarating yet daunting new realm. As a wife who has followed her husband to a foreign country for his job, this experience is a unique blend of excitement, challenges, and personal growth.

"Every time I say goodbye, I collect memories like stones along a river."

The Initial Leap of Faith

Stepping into a new country often begins with a whirlwind of emotions. The thrill of discovering new places, cultures, and flavours quickly mixes with the nerves of leaving the familiar behind. It’s an adventure that requires a leap of faith - not just from you, but your partner and family, too.

In 2016, we made a life-changing decision to take our family on an adventure halfway across the globe. With an 8-week-old baby and an 11-year-old in tow, I packed up my life in the UK and followed my partner to Hong Kong. The allure of a new culture, job opportunity, and vibrant city life was impossible to resist, despite the challenges ahead. The eldest two children decided to stay in the UK, and leaving them was indescribably hard.

"The world is my classroom, and every new city is a lesson in resilience."

Career and Personal Identity

Moving abroad can present a unique twist in your professional journey. While you support your partner’s career, it’s essential to stay connected to your personal and professional goals. The shift from a career-driven lifestyle to becoming a stay-at-home mum was daunting for me. I had spent years nurturing my professional ambitions, and suddenly, I was faced with the prospect of giving it all up to focus on the family. While I was excited about the new experiences, the uncertainty that came with being the primary caregiver in a foreign country weighed on me. Remember you can explore local job opportunities, volunteer, or even start a side passion project that aligns with your interests. This balance fosters your personal growth and enriches your experience as an individual.

"Home is where the wifi connects automatically, but my heart finds a little piece of it everywhere I go."

Building a New Home

Establishing a new home can take time; it’s more than just unpacking boxes. It involves creating a space that resonates with your heart. Whether it’s finding the perfect artwork that reflects your personality or incorporating meaningful mementos from home, making your new place feel like you can be an enriching process.

I had to quickly set up a new home and adjusting to life in Hong Kong while caring for both an 8-week-old and an 11-year-old brought its own set of challenges. During the day, I was juggling nap times for the baby while also helping navigate a new school environment. Finding the right balance often felt like an uphill battle.

"To be an expat is to embrace both the beauty of diversity and the bittersweet longing for familiarity."

No Domestic Help, No Problem?

In Hong Kong, the concept of hiring extra domestic help is common. However, our decision not to employ anyone meant I had to manage our household entirely on my own. Each day became a game of time management. I would strategise around nap schedules, school runs, and grocery trips, all while attempting to soak in the local lifestyle. Where we live in Discovery Bay you survive on walking or public buses as there are few cars allowed.

"Life as an expat teaches you that the world is bigger than borders and that friendship knows no language."

Finding Friendship and Community

The expat life often means leaving behind your support network. However, it also opens doors to meet incredible people from all walks of life. Join expat groups, community classes, or local clubs focused on interests that ignite your passion, whether it's art, cooking, or wellness. These connections can be vital, creating a sense of belonging in your new surroundings.

I arrived, being a new mum in a foreign country without much of a support network and it felt isolating. It was essential for me to connect with other expat families facing similar experiences. I discovered various groups and forums where I could share my journey, swap tips on parenting, and even learn a bit about local customs and traditions. Forming friendships with other parents helped navigate the complexities of expat life and provided invaluable support.

"Being an expat transforms ordinary days into extraordinary adventures."

Embracing a New Culture

As you immerse yourself in the local culture, you may discover a vibrant world waiting to be explored. Language barriers may pose challenges, yet every miscommunication can lead to laughter and new friendships. Attend local festivals, indulge in traditional foods, and embrace everyday activities like shopping at the local market. This is where the magic happens; you become part of the community.

For me I was captivated by Hong Kong and its rich tapestry of culture, food, and customs. From weekends spent exploring bustling street markets to finding tranquil beaches away from city life, I became immersed in our new home. Each day was an opportunity to teach my older child about cultural diversity and global citizenship while creating a calming routine for the baby. Finding ways to blend our British lifestyle with local practices felt rewarding in unexpected ways.

"Travelling allows you to discover not just new places, but the hidden corners of your own heart."

Navigating Challenges

Living in Hong Kong without domestic help came with its challenges. The fast-paced lifestyle, busy streets, and humid climate were overwhelming at times. I learned to be resourceful, finding creative solutions to everyday obstacles. Whether it was trekking up hills with a stroller or finding the quickest route to the nearest park, each challenge presented an opportunity for growth - both for myself and for our family as a whole.

"In every culture, there’s a different flavour of joy; being an expat means savouring them all."

The Joys of Expat Family Life

Despite the inevitable difficulties, there were also countless joys in expat life. Bonding as a family over new experiences, celebrating local festivals, and enjoying the culinary delights of the city created lasting memories. Witnessing my children's adaptability was inspiring as they made friends from various cultural backgrounds and learned to embrace differences.

“Sometimes, our greatest trials are the stepping stones to our most profound purpose, turning the journey into a colourful adventure of health and healing.”

Gluten Free and Autoimmune Diseases

In the bustling streets of Hong Kong, my youngest two were diagnosed with coeliac disease, a journey that mirrored my own experience with this autoimmune condition. It was here, amid the vibrant culture and diverse culinary landscape, that I embarked on my journey to become a health coach. This twist of fate has deepened my understanding of gluten intolerance and the intricacies of mindful health.

Reflecting on whether this would have happened if we had stayed in the UK, it’s a thought-provoking query. Would the diagnosis have come as swiftly? Would I have found the same calling in health coaching? Perhaps everything happens for a reason. The challenges we faced in Hong Kong led me to a path that not only transformed my life but also equipped me to support others on their wellness journeys.

Navigating a gluten-free lifestyle with my children has forged an unbreakable bond between us. Together, we have built a resilient community, filled with support and understanding, celebrating each milestone, big and small. It's a reminder that sometimes our greatest trials lead us to our most profound purpose. Each day, I embrace the playful journey of health and healing, knowing that our experiences, wherever they may lead us, shape who we are and how we uplift others.

“Let the uncertainty of expat life be your canvas for growth, turning challenges into vibrant joy and resilience.”

Embracing the Unknown

Expat life isn’t always easy. Homesickness can creep in, and there may be days filled with uncertainty. However, the unknown holds endless possibilities for adventure, growth, and unexpected joy. Each challenge you face strengthens not only your relationship with your spouse but also your resilience and adaptability.

“Embrace the stillness, soak in the sights, and nurture your mind, body, and spirit for a balanced expat life.”

The Beauty of Mindfulness

Throughout this journey, practicing mindfulness can help navigate the ups and downs of expat life. Enjoy moments of stillness to appreciate your surroundings, take leisurely walks to soak in the sights, and make time for self-care to maintain your well-being. This focus on your mind, body, and spirit creates a balanced expat life.

"As we wander through foreign lands, we carry our roots in our pockets and our dreams in our hearts."

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on those early days, I see this move as a pivotal moment for our family. Embracing expat life in Hong Kong has taught us resilience, adaptability, and the importance of cherishing every moment. I’ve grown as a mother, learned to thrive in new environments, and gained a unique perspective that will last a lifetime. The challenges may have been significant, but the rewards far outweigh them. In this bustling city of neon lights and bustling markets, we didn’t just find a new home; we found a way to flourish together as a family - one playful adventure at a time.

“Choosing expat life is not just a journey; it's a vibrant tapestry woven with love, adventure, and growth. Embrace every moment!”

Choosing Expat Life

I can’t lie, choosing expat life as a supportive partner is a bold and enriching decision. It invites you into a world of transformation, where love, adventure, and mindfulness intertwine. Embrace this journey fully, knowing that with each step, you are crafting a beautiful tapestry of experiences that will shape the rest of your life. Every moment spent in this new land is an opportunity to grow and explore - both as a couple and as an individual. So go ahead, take that leap, and let the adventure begin!

Health and Auto-immune Diseases

I have auto-immune diseases and expected to be on medicine for the rest of my life, but I didn't want to live like that. My rheumatology Doctor was so supportive of the change I wanted to make, and with their help, I now manage my auto-immune diseases by being strict with my diet.

It can be quite frightening when you first find out you have to change the way you eat but for some of us' Food is our medicine.'

I have several websites, write blogs, and I'm currently in the process of writing a book.

I trained to be Holistic Health Coach, Meditation and Mindfulness Teacher and Certified Gluten Free Practitioner in order to heal myself, my family and others who find themselves on the same journey as myself.

Our love for photography started on our travels. We wanted to capture images of the areas we travelled to both for our own records and for our family back at home. Some of these images were reproduced as watercolours. Our favourite images we display at home and friends often asked where we had purchased the pictures! Now you can purchase them online directly from us.
